Born in Recife, he graduated with a degree in Performing Arts from Unicamp and a Master’s and Doctorate in Performing Arts from USP. In 2001 he staged his first play. He is currently the most awarded playwright in Brazil, his plays have already become new classics of Brazilian dramaturgy. Studied and acclaimed by critics inside and outside Brazil, Newton Moreno’s work has been oriented to represent the impact that homosexual love stories have on society. His investigation of the homoerotic universe and of body-art through poetic language, and his gaze on the risks of love, have made him one of the most expressive voices of his generation.
His play ‘La comida’, a text created at the Playwriting Workshop of the Royal Court Theatre between 2003 and 2005, was premiered in Buenos Aires, directed by Cibeles Forjaz in 2012 (Teatro del Abasto).
